Stefano Vignati appointed music director and principal conductor of Opera Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new music director and principal conductor has been named for Opera Carolina.


Maestro Stefano Vignati took over the roles effective May 1. 

Vignati, a world-renowned conductor and artist-educator, brings nearly three decades of experience to the role.

Vignati joined Opera Carolina in 2022 and made his debut in Charlotte the next year, conducting Mozart’s "The Marriage of Figaro." His appointment marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first Italian, naturalized in the US, to hold this position in Opera Carolina’s 75-year history.


In his new role, Vignati will conduct at least one mainstage production per season and play a pivotal role in shaping the musical direction of Opera Carolina. His first major project will be conducting Puccini’s double bill, "Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi," for the 2026 season.


Shanté Williams, Opera Carolina's general director, expressed her excitement about working with Vignati, highlighting his contributions to developing opera talent. Carol Kendrick, chair of the Opera Carolina Board of Directors, also praised Vignati’s appointment, noting its historic significance.


Vignati’s career is marked by extensive international experience, having conducted over 60 operas and an a symphonic catalog spanning various countries. Recent performances include leading the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.

In addition to his role at Opera Carolina, Vignati serves as principal guest conductor at New York City Opera and artistic director of the International Lyric Academy.
